Indications
1/ Inhibition/suppression of physiological lactation: CABERLEX 0.5 is indicated for the prevention of physiological lactation immediately after delivery and for the suppression of established lactation: - After delivery, when the mother chooses not to breastfeed or when breastfeeding is contraindicated for medical reasons related to the mother or the newborn. - After stillbirth or abortion. CABERLEX 0.5 prevents physiological lactation by inhibiting prolactin secretion. In controlled clinical trials, CABERLEX 0.5 given as a single 1 mg dose on the first postpartum day was effective in inhibiting milk secretion and in reducing breast engorgement and pain in 70–90% of women. Only a very small number of patients experienced rebound breast symptoms, generally mild, in the third week after delivery. Suppression of milk secretion and relief of breast engorgement and pain following lactation onset were achieved in approximately 85% of women receiving a total of 1 mg of cabergoline, given in four divided doses over two days. Rebound breast symptoms after 10 days are uncommon. 2/ Treatment of hyperprolactinaemic disorders: CABERLEX 0.5 is indicated for the treatment of disorders associated with hyperprolactinaemia, such as amenorrhoea, oligomenorrhoea, anovulation and galactorrhoea. CABERLEX 0.5 is indicated in patients with prolactin-secreting pituitary adenomas (micro- and macroprolactinomas), idiopathic hyperprolactinaemia, or empty sella syndrome with associated hyperprolactinaemia, which are the underlying conditions of the clinical manifestations listed above. At doses of 1–2 mg per week as long-term therapy, CABERLEX 0.5 normalised serum prolactin levels in approximately 83% of previously amenorrhoeic women. Based on progesterone levels measured during the luteal phase, ovulation returned to normal in 89% of treated women, and galactorrhoea resolved in 90% of treated cases. A reduction in tumour size was observed in 50–90% of male and female patients with micro- or macroprolactinoma.
